The queenship of the Blessed Virgin is established through her proximity to her Son…

Coronation of the Virgin (Andrea di Bartolo)
Coronation of the Virgin (Andrea di Bartolo)

Why do we call the Blessed Virgin Queen of Heaven?

It is true that she is descended from a King – the Great King David – but it is equally true that she lived a simple and modest life.  She was born to elderly parents.  She lived a simple life.  She prayed to God and visited her cousin in need.  She looked after the neighbours and community.  A woman who lived two thousand years ago and changed the world said only a few words in Sacred Scripture.  She was not educated.  She could not read.  She had no job or career or power.  When her Earthly life was ended (when she was assumed into Heaven both body and soul) she was a widow and a childless mother – the mother of a convicted executed criminal.

To all the world she was in the lowest and most vulnerable part of the world.  In fact, the Blessed Virgin was so vulnerable that one of the two times that Christ cried in Scripture is when He saw the widow burying her son.  And His pity for her was so great that He raised the son from the dead.  And this was because He was experiencing the grief that His own Blessed Mother would bear at His passing…

In 1954, Pope Pius XII established the feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin, which was founded in Scripture…  Saint Gabriel announced at the annunciation that the Son of the Blessed Virgin would rule from David’s Throne forever.

Saint Elizabeth, mother of Saint John the Baptist, called the Blessed Virgin, “mother of my Lord” when she saw her during the Visitation.

Throughout her life, the Blessed Virgin is seen through her close connection to her ROYAL Son.  And it is though this association with Christ – through her consent in the moment of the annunciation that the Blessed Virgin consented not only to share in Christ’s suffering, but also to share in His mission to save souls through her involvement as His mother.

And in this way, the queenship of the Blessed Virgin is established through her proximity to her Son…

The Blessed Virgin is the NEW Eve.  She is the person who was chosen to assist in the redemption of humanity.  And I do not mean this in a blasphemous way or to imply that it was the Blessed Virgin’s sacrifice that saved humanity from sin.  Not at all.  It was Christ alone as God made Man who has the power to save us from sin.  However, the Blessed Virgin is Queen of Heaven because she was able to make herself as nothing in the face of God’s Holy Will.  She laid down all obstacles to God’s Will so that He could do as He saw fit through her.  She gave herself to God body and soul so that HE COULD DO HIS WORK.  For that is the infinite humility of God – God’s willingness to rely on one of His creatures to make way for Him.  And when that creature did so as perfectly as the Blessed Virgin, how could He help but reward her IMITATED humility through the Queenship He bestowed upon her…?

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
