“My Heart overflows with great mercy for souls, and especially for poor sinners. If only they could understand that I am the best of Fathers to them and that it is for them that the Blood and Water flowed from My Heart as from a fount overflowing with mercy.” (Jesus to Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska at Diary 367).

Saint Faustina and the Divine Mercy
Saint Faustina and the Divine Mercy

I feel that I have been born into the best generation that has ever been.

I live in a time when Christ has made known His Mercy to the world.  Never before have the Catholic community understood more of the Divine and Infinite Mercy of God.

This is not to say that God’s mercy has changed.  Of course not.  God is unchanging.  That is His very nature.  Rather, what I am saying is that God is infinitely merciful as He always was since the beginning of time, and He remains infinitely merciful for the remainder of eternity.  But, we have now been told about this Mercy.

Pope Saint John Paul II considered the institution of the Divine Mercy as the greatest achievement of his pontificate.  And this was a strong statement considering this was the Pope who was instrumental in the demolition of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War.  This was a Pope who brought a huge number of modern Saints to be beatified by the Catholic Church.  This was a Pope who instituted World Youth Day…  And still, he considered this great Feast – this eternal quality of God – as His greatest achievement!

I have been thinking about this.  In ancient times people did not understand God in this way.  They believed that God was waiting to annihilate them in Hell.  They were waiting for a God who would judge them without mercy and because this is what they thought they would judge each other harshly like this.

But that is not God’s way.  God Himself did not enter time and space as Man to cast us all into Hell.  He came through an act of INFINITE MERCY and He did this so that He could save us.  Even at the final hour, during His agony on the Cross, He THIRST.  And that thirst was for souls as He craved the salvation of souls.  He wanted His agony to atone for all the sins of all the sinners…

“My Heart overflows with great mercy for souls, and especially for poor sinners. If only they could understand that I am the best of Fathers to them and that it is for them that the Blood and Water flowed from My Heart as from a fount overflowing with mercy. For them I dwell in the tabernacle as King of Mercy. I desire to bestow My graces upon souls, but they do not want to accept them. You, at least, come to Me as often as possible and take these graces they do not want to accept. In this way you will console My Heart. Oh, how indifferent are souls to so much goodness, to so many proofs of love! My Heart drinks only of the ingratitude and forgetfulness of souls living in the world. They have time for everything, but they have no time to come to Me for graces.” (Jesus to Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska at Diary 367).

And knowing this – understanding this great mercy of God – I am quite overjoyed to live at this time, this most wonderful of times, where God has seen fit to reveal to us His great and infinite mercy…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
