“‘Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.’” (Luke 12:7).

Sometimes I get worried about things. Sometimes something at work or at home causes me distress. When that happens it is very easy to start going down a path that leads to a great deal of distress… I worry about one thing or the other and as a result I am left at a quandary, trying to make sense of all the rabbit holes that I have crawled down…
And I have been thinking about all the different ways that my Beloved tells me not to be afraid. And one of the most beautiful is when Christ speaks of the sparrows… And He tells us that even the hair on our head are numbered…
“Jesus began to say to his disciples, ‘Do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.’” (Luke 12:1-7).
We are not to be afraid. We are to be brave because our bravery is though God. We are not to rely on our own strength – for under our own power we have nothing at all. We are to rely on the power of God. You see, Christ warns us not to be complacent about evil. He tells me to be afraid of the Evil One – the one who can harm my soul – not my body.
He warns me because He knows that I am merely human and the Evil One is an angel and angels are more advanced than humans. It is their very nature that makes the angels superior to me – because being pure spirits they have more power that I cannot access through this weak mortal body of mine.
And I have been reflecting on that. Because Christ was not really talking about the hairs on my head when He is talking about that. He is talking about the care that God takes of me. He is talking about how He thought me into being. He is talking about how my small miserable sinful little soul matters to Him. He is explaining that He created the whole world and everything that is in it for MY SAKE. So that I could be with Him in Heaven.
And that is the point of my God. LOVE. That love and care for me – even for the hairs on the top of my head. Even for those He put in His care and His effort. And I am wondering today, whether I have any chance at all of being able to please my Lord and God – for a sinful soul like mine has so much work to do to earn the love of the Infinite One – a love that includes even my hair…
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
