Glove

If I were to fill my life with God, it would be like filling a glove with a good hand.

I have been thinking about what it is to include God in every part of my life.
And I recently saw a talk by someone who I do not know, who spoke about the importance of the glove in terms of spirituality…
The way she described it was like this… Imagine we have a glove – an empty glove. Can that empty glove do anything at all? Does it have any power? Can it move things or change things or even move itself?
Of course, the answer to that is… NO. The empty glove has no power and no strength and cannot move anything.
So, then the next question is, If that glove had a hand inside it, would it then have power and would it then have strength? With a hand inside that glove, would things be changed and moved as a result of the strength of the hand inside the glove?
Of course, the answer to that is… YES. A hand inside the glove can make changes.
So, then the next question is, If the hand inside the glove is a good and healthy hand, would it be safe to assume that it can move the glove to do good and healthy things? And if the hand inside the glove is a bad and unhealthy hand, would it be safe to assume that it can move the glove to do bad and unhealthy things?
Of course, the answer to those two questions is… YES and YES.
So then, let’s consider who the glove is and who is the Hand…
And that part is pretty obvious... The glove is me and my life here on Earth. In and of myself I am nothing – like an empty glove and I cannot make very much difference. But if I were to fill my life with God, it would be like filling a glove with a good hand.
And with God’s presence inside my life, things would change, and they would change for the good. I would be moved to do what it right and to make choices that would lead me to better outcomes.
And I have been reflecting on how this looks in practical terms in my life. After all, it is one thing to theorise about God and quite another to live within Him inside your glove – or your skin, so to speak…
Living with God within me means that I must choose to be charitable even when I do not want to be. It means I must forgive others even when I know nothing will ever change. It means that I must entertain boring ideas and hard work and discipline, just for the sake of being disciplined.
For living with God means that I need to remain with Him always – in my mind, heart and body… And that takes commitment. Real commitment. Especially if I want to continue to be the glove…
For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
