“Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them.” (Matthew 5:17).

I wanted to think about a hypothetical case…

Imagine that one day the government passed a law, and that law stated that gravity no longer existed.  And without the existence of gravity, the government would force all its citizens to wear space suits and hammer things down to stop them floating away.  Perhaps people would start to use ropes and cords and ties around their waists to make sure that they could be tied down and held in place when things were happening.

Now, imagine how the world would be with all that nonsense.  After all, stating thing as a law does not make it real or proper.  It would not – in fact – take gravity away.  Instead, gravity would continue to exist and people would simply be forced to do inconvenient things to perpetuate a lie that seemed to suit the government and whatever their latest agenda was.

And I have been thinking about that today.  You see, stating a new rule or law does not actually change the Law of God.  And the Law of God is unmoveable and unchangeable – just as gravity and the laws of gravity are…

Christ explained a little about those laws…

“Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:17-19).

How easy it would be to take things simply and to change the way that we present things in the world.  How easy it would be to know that we could change this or that and make we rules that suited our purpose so well.  And yet, how easy it would be to be lost – and totally lost…

It is almost like taking medication.  It is often not easy to take medication.  Perhaps it tastes bad, or has difficult side effects?  Perhaps the medicine makes a person feel weak and so they prefer not to take any medicine at all?  Whatever the case, choosing not to take medicine does not actually cure the disease.  Choosing not to do what is required of me does not change the rules or make gravity disappear.  The truth is the truth and changing rules or calling things by different names or trying to ignore the medicine does not fix the problem or make any difference or change the outcome.

And today, as I have been considering gravity, I have come to realise that perhaps there is nothing more important the recognising that – gravity…

For with prayer, I stand on Holy Ground where everything is clear. Here. At the Foot of the Cross.
